It’s Christmas!! And we could think of nothing better to share today than this special lady, our business partner, aka Mom, who is the veritable queen of holidays and the source of all our Croatian-ness. It was her adventurous spirit, moving halfway around the world with her sweet pup Lila, that enabled us to start DOMA Trading. She is the one who meets the artisans and finds all the best treasures, who spends time with families and hears all their stories and learns about authentic Croatian traditions first-hand so we can share them with you.⁠

But most importantly, she is the one who taught us how to love—unashamedly, with your whole heart. Family would mean a whole lot less if it weren’t for this amazing woman, and we just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, Mom—for all you are, and all you do.⁠

Croatian tradition is near and dear to our hearts, because we are a Croatian family. Despite growing up on the far side of the ocean from the place our great-grandparents called home, we have clung to our roots for more than a hundred years, even if in small ways.⁠

I remember every Christmas as a kid, waking up in the morning and going straight to the Christmas table to find it sparkling with treats and decorations and magic. Without fail, beneath all the old memories and new traditions we had collected was the gorgeous heklanje tablecloth that Nona (my great-grandmother) had made and given to our mom when she was just a little girl. The very tablecloth in this photo. The very day. I never got to meet Nona, but I was able to see a bit of her heart every time a holiday came around, to hold in my own hands the same threads her precious hands had fashioned so carefully into a work of art.⁠

Looking back, I’m amazed that we still have this photo (and of course the tablecloth). That little girl had no idea that that the traditions she was surrounded by were unique to such a small corner of the world, or that one day she and her own kids would be working to share those traditions with as many people as they could.⁠
⁠
Things come and go and time just moves so fast. Now another Christmas day is almost here. Maybe spend a little less time this year thinking about what will make a catchy post, and think about what might last...for generations.⁠

As far back as the 16th century, Croatians would show their love with the gift of a licitar—a heart-shaped honey cookie decorated with flowers or frills, often with a little mirror on the front. When a young man would give his beloved the delicate heart, she would see her own reflection in the tiny mirror and know that she was the only one in his heart. ⁠

Our leather heart necklaces were created by one of the few remaining master craftsmen practicing traditional leatherwork in Slavonia, adding a new but time-honored twist to the licitar tradition.⁠
